GhostBusters: The Video Game - PS3

GhostBusters! Is it good? .................Yes!
Lately I have been noticing that I have been getting games just based on the fact that, "THIS" is the next new game that is a must play for gamers. I mean when I first saw killzone 2, I didn't want it. I got it because all the rave about it, that its a MUST play game. Now Infamous and Prototype are today's big games. But you know what, I am just not interested in playing them. So I'm not going to get it just because its the next big game that's out this month.

Unlike Ghostbusters, that I got because I was really looking forward to it, ever since I heard about it years ago. I really wanted this game and couldn't wait to play it. Its these types of games that I really enjoy and will keep me busy until the next game comes out that I want to play.

What can I say about Ghostbusters to make it short and sweet. To the average gamer, this is just another shooter but your weapons are proton packs and the enemies are mostly ghost. Really nothing spectacular about it. BUT, for a GHOSTBUSTERS FAN!!.. holy shit, its a shooter where your weapon is a proton pack that you can use to trap ghost. HOLY COW!!

Added the bonus of the entire cast of the movie have come back to lend their voice talent to the game. Written by Harold Ramis and Dan Akroyd which say this is their version of Ghostbusters 3. Coupled with all the original ghost and places from the original film, running around the library, the hotel, makes this a MUST HAVE for Ghostbuster fans.

The first time you get to shoot the proton pack and capture a ghost and wrangle them into the trap....WOW!!..I don't have anything bad to say about it, its just feels right, very well done. If they had a bonus level where all you had to do was wrangle ghost, I think I would be very happy.

There are certain things in games that one looks forward to doing when done well. Mine were being able to ignite and turn off a lightsaber for the first time. Extracting Wolverines Claws, in and out, in and out, transforming from a car to a robot and firing a proton gun. There is just something very satisfying when blasting a neutron beam across the room.

I don't want to spoil anything for anyone who hasn't played the game , just that, IF you are a fan of Ghostbusters, then this is a MUST play. If not, then...sure, you may enjoy the 8 hrs you get from this.

I was also surprised that it has multiplayer co-op. But once you play it, its not really co-op. If you are competing against other people online, ITS NOT CO-OP!! Most of the trophies for online have to do with coming in first in a bunch of challenges, but in order to do that, you are competing with 4 other people online to see who can trap the most ghost, even if it means stealing a wrangled ghost from another teammate.

It was my 3rd match online and I came across 2 assholes in this one particular game. The guy who I choose to play has was Winston. Well, let the racial and assholery commence. It was one of the worst experiences I had online is a super long while. Not the gameplay, just these 2 assholes who I would say were probable between the ages of 16-20 and male. They didn't shut the fuck up, Fag this, N****ER that, your mother, your sister, you name it and they were just throwing out some of the most abusive stuff that you hear about when playing online. It was horrible, I finished out the match, and said "You assholes are the reason that online gaming gets a bad name"

I turned off the game and didn't play it for 2 days, it left that bad a taste with me. I don't like that sorta shit, fun and games sure, but when you are assholes just to be assholes, It's then, that I don't mind running you down in the middle of street and then stopping to make sure my tires didn't get punctured from your bones. But these things happen online, and the only advice I can give, is don't talk back and just quit the game. You can make a abuse report, but does it even matter?!

Anywho, besides all that shenanigans, The game is a great game. More so for me, because I am a super fan of Ghostbusters. I'll say it again, if you are a fan, GET THIS!!!!

The trailer is even more of a movie trailer than a video game.

FrostBite - Atari 2600

This game was like most Atari games, the further you got into the game, the faster it got. I always wondered if these games ever timed out or you got so far that it couldn't go any faster that it just looped back to the beginning again. I mean how fast could one actually play any game. Frogger, Donkey Kong, Space Invaders. There's only so fast a human being can react to something, then it becomes luck and having enough lives to make it through. Anywho, has nothing to do with the game, just my brain ramblings.

I remember Dad brought this game back from Labrador for me. And stereotypically enough, it was a Eskimo (I know,... don't use those words, but these are the words of a 8 year old, so deal with it.) who had to build his Igloo by jumping on ice flows to collect ice blocks and avoiding birds, crabs and clams and polar bears. So when I first looked at this game, I thought,"wow, this is what Eskimo kids must play" that and eat seal blubber.

Each level got a little faster each time with the direction of the ice flow changing and coming out at different sizes. There were also fish that you could eat that helped increase your score which helped you get extra lives. I remember it was pretty easy to max out my lives, but that was needed, because like I said in the beginnings, the game gets faster and faster, so the jumping comes down to insane timing and luck.

If you take too long to get your Igloo built a polar bear comes out to make your life harder by not letting you jump to your safety zones when the clams and evil crabs were in the way.

But all that aside, I really enjoyed this game has a kid, I got pretty damn fast at it as well. I tried it again recently on my Atari collection and its still has much fun has ever. And if I learned anything from this game is that Eskimos(Inuit) have a perilous life of building their homes while avoiding killer clams and evil crabs, with murderous birds try to peck their eyes out. Its a hard life up in the North.

This video is way too long. But the first little bit gives you a good idea of what it was like.

Kangaroo - Atari 2600

Holy Shit, its a Monkey Punchin' Kangaroo!!

You see, your kid is at the top of the level and you are at the bottom and you have to get to him and punch apple throwing monkeys along the way. TADA!!! I'm going to make a game where you have to punch cross throwing nuns, and you play has Hitler!

This game was pretty simple, your basic Donkey Kong rip off, but seeing has I didn't own Donkey Kong on the Atari 2600, this was the next best thing. In fact I rather enjoyed punching the monkeys. Although it was difficult to time the punches to hit the monkeys and even harder to time it so you punched the apples they threw, I had a good time. In fact it was probable one of the few games that had you punching something, actually physical violence against animals.

My memory of this game was when my religious cousins came over to play and I remember thinking, "I wonder if its OK for "God" people to see monkeys getting Punched?" and being almost embarrassed when their Dad, my Religious uncle coming in my room and looking at a game, where you punched monkeys in the head. Hey, what the hell did I know, I was 7.

But it was definitely one of my favourite games to play back then. Perhaps it paved the way for GTA, after all you got to start punching somewhere, might has well be monkeys.

Spiderman - Atari 2600

Growing up, my only exposure to superheros was through comic books. We had TV, but the only station we had was CBC. There was no cable, we all had TV antennas stuck to the side of our houses, and on nights when Hockey Night in Canada didn't come in clear, someone had to run out on the roof to mess around with the antenna until someone inside screamed,"THAT'S GOODS!"

My only exposure to cartoons, GOOD cartoons, was when we left our community to visit my cousins, they had cable and when I rented the latest episode of He-man or Super Friends on Beta. The battle for supremacy reigned between VHS and BETA. I always thought BETA was better because it was bigger, and when your a kid, bigger is better. Where am I going with all this?

Though the limited exposure that I did have to superheros, was very limited it was enough to drive me to tie a towel around my neck for Superman, nailed wool to the wall to swing like Spiderman, (mom didn't like it when I nailed wool to the walls) etc.So I was pretty gaga for superheros when I was young, 5 years old to be exact. I was also lucky enough to have my parents get me a Atari 2600 and the first game I got with this, was Spiderman.

I couldn't open the box fast enough, the pixel red and blue on the back of the case made my brain jello. I couldn't believe that I was going to swing like Spiderman, stick to walls, shoot webs from my hands, battle with the green goblin, fight baddies. It was all very overwhelming. Its a feeling that one can only have at 5 years old.

I jam in the cartridge and flip the switch, and there in front of me is a building, "OH MY GOD!! its a building!, I wonder if I can stick to it?" I press a button and poof , there I am, "Holy shit, I can shoot webs....holy meatballs, I can shoot web sideways!!!". I continue to web around the building and swing too far off the side and plummet to my death. "WOOHOO!!!, I played Spiderman!!!...I killed myself, but who cares.!!" And that's pretty much how I remember my experience with Spiderman.

The game itself is super simple, you swing up to the top of the building to disarm a bomb before it goes off and kills everyone. The green goblin is on top, flying back and forth, at first slow, but later on, faster and he drops bombs. There are also baddies in the window that you can swing through and get(kill) and do the same for small bombs. Then reach the top to save the day. It was pretty simple, and I loved every minute of it.

I will not dare to look at this game has if I was looking at a 2008 game. It wouldn't be fair. The game I remembered was awesome, the time I spent playing it was Spectacular, playing has Spiderman was Amazing. It was everything that a 5 year old could ever want in a superhero game.

Which brings up a point of today's kids. I would've given anything to see a live action, well animated cartoon, cool toys, costumes that look like your superhero and not moms pink towel, back when I was a kid. But what I did have, I enjoyed immensely. All the Spiderman games out there today would have put me in bliss world at the age of 5. I wouldn't have cared that the missions were lame and repetitive, heck, their didn't have to me missions, I would've been happy swinging around New York , and that's it!

I would have to say that the memory of playing Spiderman on the Atari 2600 when I was 5 far surpasses any Spiderman game that I have every played since.

SeaQuest - Atari 2600

Wow, this is old. I can't use what I know now to review or talk about this game. So I will let my 6 year old inner child tell this story.

I got an Atari 2600 for Christmas, it was neat. I had a few games for it. I don't know how much Atari games costs, but I do know that I can get a bag of chips and a bar and a bottle or orange crush all for a $1.50. One of my joysticks broke so I got a new one that looked like the flight stick from Airwolf. It has 2 buttons on it. 2!! But it really doesn't matter cause they both did the same thing.

My Dad got me a new game called SeaQuest, you drive around in a sub and you have to pick up these divers before you run out of air. Once you get all of them you surface and move on to the next level. But has you get further into the game, there are sharks and giant guppies and mini bad subs that try to kill you. They get faster and faster with each level and more and more of them come out. AND they are different colors, there is even 2 players. Once I almost got to 200,000 points.

But it was my uncle that was really good at the game. He could get up so far that I couldn't even tell which ones were the bad guys and which was him, because there were so many things on the screen at once and they were all moving so fast. He came up everyday for a whole week to play while I lay sick on the couch watching and mom yelling at me that the tv will burn my sick eyes if I don't let them rest by looking at the inside of my eyelids.

I wasn't allowed to play it very much, because we only had one tv and we had to share with moms soaps and the news in the evening. My mom would tell me to go outside and play when they were watching tv and I couldn't play Atari. Personally I think she rather me play Atari if she knew the alternative was Rock Tag. We should all be dead, but god bless a child's weak throwing arm.

Its a really fun game, much better than ET, I still don't know (WTF) to do in that game. I hope they come out with SeaQuest 2.

Yeah, it was a great childhood memory. To refresh my memories of all these Atari games I picked up Atari Anthologies. Its a great game for old school gamers, if you are in to that sorta thing. Playing seaquest again, is fun for about 10 min then I have to move on. But I always look back on my Atari Experiences with fond memories.
