I was one of those kids that would spend money at the arcade when I got the chance to play games I wasn't very good at. Street Fighter 2 was one of those games that ate up a few allowences. Then Street Fighter 2 came out on the SNES and a good friend of mine got a copy of it. The good news was no more money being spent at the arcade- the bad news- I still wasn't good at it.
Now this comes out and I welcomed it like an old friend only to find out after all this time I still suck at it. I downloaded a Wii Virtual Console port a while back and still was never very good and when I found out about this one I was excited. After playing for a few hours I realize I still suck.
After all this time I still suck at this game! Playing with the xbox controller feels a bit weird so if you pick this up you might want to consider getting a good cheap arcade stick (or you can make your own) herehere and here
old-new (and it looks great!)
The game looks great! The character models look stunning and the backgrounds look really detailed and alive. There are no unlockables but that's okay. We know what to expect from this game, and it really delivers as the best version of SSF2 on the market. If you're a fan of fighting games and don't mind getting your ass kicked this game is for you!
When I first heard about this game I thought "really??" and dismissed it as a cheap gimmick for a series that has been slowly getting worse with every new release. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed MK Deception for it's unloackables, and crazier new characters, but I knew it was starting to run it's course.
MK vs DCU felt as though it would "jump the shark" so I thought nothing of it. Then it came out and my girlfriend thought it would be fun to play for a few nights so we rented it from blockbuster. I was surprised! It was actually fun to play. It's a bit slower than most other fighters so anybody can enjoy it and the story mode from the hero side was actually pretty funny.
Bad run-on sentence explanation ahead:
Superman zaps Darkseid while going through a portal while Raiden does the same thing to Shao Khan which causes a rift in the universe smashing DC's earth with Mortal Kombat's earth, so the heroes and villians on either side join forces to fight each other until they figure out the true enemy is a new guy that is Darkseid and Shao Khan mashed together... whew..
Pretty cheesey but it works.
My favorite characters to play as are from the DC universe side (Batman being my favorite.) The moves are easy to pull off and to learn and the backgrounds and character models look really nice. I was alos impressed with some of the costumes from the DC universe side. They made minor changes to some that really work well and look good (Green Lantern being one of the biggest changes)
The game really suffers from lack of characters. With only 20 characters to choose from and 2 unlockables it really feels limited. So many of the regular Mortal Kombat characters are missing and I would've loved to see more from the DC Universe (Reverse Flash, Mr. Freeze, BatGirl, etc etc)
With no unlockables (what happened to the graveyard?) and very few characters this game can get old fast. Worth a rent or wait until it's cheap but I wouldn't pay full price.
Taking some time to post, since I am in the process of moving to PEI, so kinda hard to find time to post lately. I would like to post a little more, but eh.
I think its been awhile that I talked about something that really blew my mind, since sonic the craphog, in a bad way. Well, Here it is and holy cow was I ever blown away, and not the good blowing.
The last 3 Medal of Honor games I have played have all been for the PC and they were the first ones to come out. So I got the spear head and Breakthrough, all great games, both single and online play. So I figured I was in for much of the same but with a little Humph!! Boy was I surprised.
So lets get the good outta the way. 1) The levels look amazing, they really put everything into making these look great. Market Garden really looks spectacular. 2) The controls work well, they are what you would expect. 3) The leveling up your guns is really fun and entertaining and a new twist on what something old. 4) The gameplay is what you would expect, its WW2, go kill Germans.
This game is the biggest fuckfest of technical errors I have ever seen in any game in my entire life. Now that's a big statement, my entire life!!! Let me take your through some of the scenarios that happened during play.
THE ENDLESS RESPAWN
If you would like to stand back and do a tactical attack and take out enemies from the distant or before they see you. Then you are an idiot for thinking that. Don't you know that if you kill a German, another one respawns to take its place!
Yes, enemies will keep respawning until you shoot them and then run to the area where you just shot them so they don't respawn anymore. I must have shot 25 guys behind the same box, trying to strategically take them out so I could run across the battlefield and not get shot. But nope, I had to shoot and charge the area, getting shot in the process.
THE MULTIPLYING ENEMY
Again I was at a area where enemies were respawning, but this time they weren't far away, the guy was one wooden box away. So I had shot this guy 4 times already and he just respawned again and again. But the 5th time I shot him, he divided into 5 guys. WTF!!
Now, some good came outta this, the 5 guys he divided into were my guys, so they charged the battle field taking out the guys that were keeping me from moving forward. BUT really, what the hell was that?!!!
THE STEEL WALL
Lots of time, I have one bar of life left and I will hide to regroup. This time I did in a train car. A steel train car, so you can hear the bullets zinging off the sides. So I was backed way into the corner with my rifle pointing towards the door. Then I start getting hit, not full on bullet shots, but the same hit that takes a small portion of life the same when you are just getting nicked.
I do a flurry of swinging around to see what the hell is going on, and when I did, I turned around and I was outside of the wall. Well part of me, I could look down and see a portion of me sticking out the back wall, next thing I know, I am dead. Shot because part of me was sticking out the wall.F"N wonderful
THE MAGIC COMPASS
The game gives you a compass that shows the position of your guys, (Yellow) and the bad guys (Red) So it gives you an idea of the layout, now enemies that are higher and lower than you, show up a little less bright on the map, but it still shows them.
The problem arises, when you will be running along, and has you move forward, you can see enemy positions appear on the radar. So you take a defensive position and get ready for them. Then outta nowhere, a guy pops up behind you and shoots you. WTF, where did he come from, he wasn't on the radar and hes still not showing up on the radar now that I'm dead.
Is a German Ninja, a special elite solider. NOPE!, he looks just like the rest of the guys. But its something that will happen again and again. Enemies will pop up outta nowhere, not show up on the radar and kill you. If you are lucky enough to see them first, but other than that, be prepared for lots of unexplained kills.
THE FLASH
One thing you don't want to do with the baddies, is get in melee range. Don't try to get next to them and stab them or beat them over the head with a gun. WHY?!!!, well when you get next to them, they dart across, (and not using the dash button) , blink, disappear, see them run in the opposite direction, then blink, disappear and reappear infront of you, then you are dead. They just stabbed or clubbed you.
This happen at least 75% of the time. So I just stopped trying to club people. Its easier to club baby seals...wait!?....no, I'm right, its easier to club baby seals.
THE BREAKDANCING DEADMAN
This didn't really hamper my gameplay, but I thought it was funny looking. During one of my passes, I shot a guy, who they flipped over, with his head stuck in the floor and his body standing upside down, arms and legs flailing around. I just stood there and watched. IT didn't stop, its just kept going. So after while I moved one, only to die and do this part over again.
I died 3 times during this run and each time I shot him, he did the same silly dance. It was pretty funny.
PUT BOMB HERE, NO REALLY IT GOES HERE, HONESTLY, IT DOES!!
There is one part where you have to put bombs in hatchways that are on the top of a train. The train isn't moving, so you have to run around stair wells and jump down on the train. It is here that you see the hatchway, with the glowing red indicator, that tells you to put bomb here. You then hit X and it attaches the bomb.
Well in one of these, they put the hatch under a walkway, so there is a steel bar that runs across the opening of the hatchway. SO HOW THE FUCK AM I SUPPOSE TO GET INTO THE DAMN THING!!?? I TELL YOU HOW, keep hammering away on the x, until one of 2 things happen. You get shot by Germans trying to stop you, or eventually, you get sucked into the hole and lay the bomb. What fucked up layout!!!
In CLOSING!!
So, one would think, are you playing online for all this stuff to be happening? No, This is single player. But all these problems, I have seen before while playing older online games. Infact most of these problems would be things that I think would happen due to lag, not offline in single player mode.
But that's what I think this game is made for. I think they made this for online only and rushed to slap together a single player mode. Did they test play this game? I am guessing no, or if they did, they didn't have time to fix the problem and published the game anyway, hoping that fans of the genre would eat it up. I'm glad I rented this.
Now, does all this make it a bad game, YES IT DOES. Games today shouldn't have any of these problems, did I have a bad copy, is my PS3 dying??What ever it is, its not acceptable. The game is still OK to play through if you can get past all the hiccups and their are plenty. But it defiantly knocks the game down a few notches. The game could have been a decent game, instead its a infuriating experience.
If I had to describe Little Big Planet in one word. It would be cute, very cute. Does that mean its fun, good or bad. Yeah, its fun and very innovative. Its mind boggling huge!, the limits to this game knows no bounds.
To get you started, you are given a sack person, that shows emotions depending on what buttons you press, happy, scared, angry and confused. But has nothing to do with gameplay, its just fun to make your guy look like hes pisses has all hell. You can customize your character quite a bit, make em look a pre-set costume, or mix and match to make what ever you want. Its pretty fun. Lots to download to add to your inventory.
The game itself is your standard side scroller, you can jump and grab on to certain things. The level can be played with up to 4 people. There are items that you cannot get unless you have 4 players. Its the level design that really make your guy shine. The levels are pretty standard and you are given a 100% completion for finding all hidden bubbles. Bubbles unlock new items and outfits.
But I don't think this game was made for single player story mode. This was made to be a GIANT online make your own world LBP. Like I mentioned earlier, what you can do to create a world is insane. What ever you can think of, you can make it. The tools that you have are really indept and my first level that I made, took me 4 hrs to do. Mainly just trying to frig with the tools and get things to do what I wanted them to do. ITS this option that makes LBP stand out from all the other games.
It really is mind blowing. My only complaint is in the single player, your have 3 planes that you can walk in, near, middle and far. And sometimes when you are trying to jump on certain plate forms with another plate form behind, you can miss your jump and land on something else in the for ground and background. Other than that, it takes some time to get used to all the tools to make your own level.
If you like doing that sorta thing, that LBP is your dream world. One can't get a better level creator that this game. My first level that I made was Ghostbusters. It was pretty fun. Just thinking of what to put in it and how to do it was crazy. But its done, and I'm happy with it.
This game offers alot, but only for people who really like making levels. The average gamer I think will get quite bored with it, more has a novelty. I really enjoyed it, I think anyone with a PS3 should give this a try, rent or buy, only if you like making levels.
So its been a little over a month now, since I posted the free game giveaway, where the only criteria for entering was, make a comment on that particular post.
And boy was the response for that FREE GAME astounding. We had a TOTAL OF 2......yup 2 people. I think its a great statement how just how great, Sonic the Hedgehog really is. You can't even give crap like that away.
But anywho, a guy from the states, Franklin and Pat who I work with, were the 2 that entered. Pat doesn't even own a PS3, I think he just wants to hold greatness in his hands.
But alas, only one of these guys can win. And in a draw, FRANKLIN won. YAYAAYAYAYAYA, cue Muppet theme song.
YUP, congrats their ole pal. Now, all you have to do to claim your prize, is write me a email. Send it to ******************.
I will remove the email after some time, I don't want my email floating around their for too long. If you haven't gotten back to me a week, Then pat wins. IF pat comes to his senses, then I win...or do I lose.
Anywho, congrats. You got a week from the day of this post.
Trophies on the PS3 are probable going to drive me mad. Mad in the fact that I have to get them all. Perhaps the novelty where wear off and I won't feel obligated to try and get all the trophies. But in the case of Pain, I'm pretty sure I won't be getting all the trophies. They are nuts. But what I am talking about here, is finishing Dead Space on the Hardest Difficulty, Impossible Mode.
I never play a game on hard, hardest, insane, nightmare, crazy, impossible modes. I really don't see the point of it. For most games, this means, one hit kills and tons of do overs. Fighting a boss for the upmteen time rarely seems like fun to me. But for some reason I felt the need to get all the trophies in Dead Space. Which I did, and boy is it hard. So here is a little help guide for others who are going to attempt this. This will be the PS3 version.
First off, I read online that there is a glitch that one can carry over the military suit to impossible mode, by starting impossible mode right after you finish the game using the military suit. I tried this and it didn't work. So I started out with all the regular stuff that you would start out with at easy, medium and hard.
But what did help, was the down loadable suit specific to the system. In the PS3 case, you get a black suit with blue mask, called the Obsidian suit. When maxed out it gives you 10% armor and 130 sec of air and full item slots. I beat the game using this suit and this suit only. But there is a problem. You can't get this suit until you get to the store for the first time. So you have to be extra careful for the first little while. What I did was run away from everything. I didn't shoot anything.
Once you get the suit, you have some protection. For example, you can get nudged by one of the baddies and live. But you will never survive a full out attack by one, at least not in the early levels. Once you upgrade a bit, you can take maybe 1 or 2 hits, if your lucky.
But what helped the most here, is the stasis field. It freezes enemies, long enough for you to kill them. What I found out, there is a cheat code that refills your stasis meter. The stasis field became my primary weapon. I know its cheating, but what the hell, its IMPOSSIBLE MODE!!! If you can beat the game without refilling the stasis meter. Then you truly have no life.! The code for the PS3 was, pause the game , then hit, square, triangle, triangle, square, triangle. Use this has many times has you like and it DOES NOT effect you from getting the ,"finishing the game on the hardest difficulty"Trophy.
That being said, by using this code, this does not mean, the game becomes a cake walk. Its still hard has hell. I've done levels 6,7 times over before getting it right.
Some strategies were,
1)Try and keep the enemies in front of you, don't wander out in the middle of a room to fight them. They will ass rape you. Put your back to a corner and let them come to you.
2)Use other means to kill enemies. In areas where there was 1 enemy, I did alot of freezing them and then running up to them and stomping and punching them to death. You need to do this to conserve ammo.
3) Use explosive tanks, and air vents and gravity floors to kill enemies. You don't get much ammo, so always think, whats around me first. Before shooting off your gun.
4)Buy only the plasma gun and the line gun. You don't need any other weapon. Sell all ammo and stasis items.
5) All the money that you get, buy nodes to upgrade your suit first and then your weapons. At level 11, I had both my guns maxed, the suit maxed, and the stasis and Kinesis all maxed out.
6)Watch you money, always save enough to buy a few ammo casings and health. There were 2 incidents that I ran out of ammo and health. You will find out rather quickly that if you rely on ammo too much, you will be out of it, just has fast.
Other than that, there's not much more I can tell you. I died alot by having things pop up behind me and me not being aware they were there. And I died alot in the room where fire is shooting up the hall and you had to use your kinesis to move a big steel cylinder to block the fire while you shot energy connectors. That was a tough one. But for the most part, take your time, think out your attack plan and you should slowly but surely make your way to the end.
Now I only have to beat the game using only the plasma gun and I will have my first Platinum Trophy.
I like flying shooters. I think my first experience with a flying shooter was wing commander for the PC. I thought it was amazing and since then, I've been playing variations on the genre when they come out. I must say, that not many of these types of games are made, but when one is released, I usually pick it up. Some are really good, but for the most part, they all rank in the OK dept.
Blazing Angels 2 is set up in the WW2 era. So it has all the planes of that era and even the secret ones that were only talked about. The secret army of the Germans and Japanese. For anyone who has never played any of these type of games, they all consist of , 1) Protect this, 2) Escort this, 3) Destroy this. It may or may not have a time limit attached to the mission. I prefer the ones without the time limit, mainly because I like to fart around alot in games.
The story revolves around a secret air group who have to do a secret mission to protect the world from the crazy Nazi's. Oh, those crazy Nazi's and there blimps. You are sent on mission after mission, to do 1 of the 3 things mentioned above. Now this may seem pretty boring, the same 3 things over and over again. But There is quite alot of variety in the game. For one its never just protect this thing, its always a variation on what needs protecting, so it never feels like I am doing the same things over and over.
In regards to the planes themselves, you can select from over 52 planes, each with there own set of parameters, certain planes are better suited for the job. Although you cannot choose what weapons you attach to your planes, they are pre-set. You can upgrade your weapons and defensive weapons and your plane, speed, maneuverability, armor, armor piercing bullets, etc, you get the idea. There are alot of stuff to upgrade.
You can even customize the look of your plane, paint job wise. Put insignias on them, make it all bright green if you like. Which ties in with the other part of the game. It has some of the better multiplayer for flying games, I've played. With all the customization , you and your friends can make a fleet of planes, and sorta run amuck online. Their is coop mode, which is pretty neat. And a bunch of mulitplayer options.
My only gripe with the game is, and I think this for most PS3 games, the print is so damn small, I can't see it. I guess when they make these games, they must think everyone has a 50inch TV. Because my little 25inch, I can never see what the hell the print is, the same on dead space and GTA4. So that being said, I guess I can't complain about that for this game, since it does seem like a PS3 thing.
The other thing is the customization area. Selecting planes should be has easy has clicking left, plane, left, plane. but instead, its left..loading.....loading....loading.....plane,. Clicking on any option to get to the next plane or color scheme, takes a little too long. And I'm thinking with the PS3 supposing to be this big super computer. Load times that make you feel like their are load times are unacceptable.
But that doesn't have anything to do with gameplay. The game itself, is fun, but nothing that I haven't seen before. There are achievements in the game. But since they are not trophies, I don't care about trying to get them all. I finished the game and put it away. Maybe I will try it some time when I want to go online and fiddle a bit. Its a average game, not bad, but nothing new either.
This is a PS3 Exclusive. It seems that the PS3 is lacking in the exclusive dept. So woohoo for me. Too many people have 360's, I have a total of 3 people on my network. Which makes for lacking friend mulitplayer. But one can download "Pain" for $9.99.
And some may say that this game gets old fast and becomes repetitive. The premise here is you launch people into a sandbox area , where the more things they hit, the higher the score. That's about it for the meat of the game. Sure it has some great "OHHHHH" moments or I can't believe they just did that. But I can see the appeal wearing off the average gamer.
But there is so much more to pain than just flinging a character around a city or amusement park. When you really start to get into the game, you can find out that it becomes like a giant game of mouse trap. Hit this thing which triggers the net, which hits the bowling ball, which blows up the car, now it crashes through the glass, hit the bomb , etc, etc. It takes some skill and alot of luck. Which makes this game alot of trial and error. But when you do land that perfect launch, their is a great sense of achievement.
Which is the next part of this game. There are a ton of achievements and Trophies for this game. And by no means are any of them easy to get. If its getting the trophy for getting hit in the nuts for the 500th time, or shooting yourself 300ft in the air. The achievements are pretty intense. And this is just the ingame achievements. The trophies are just has hard to get. I have yet to get even one. I have to say that these set of trophies are the hardest set of trophies I have come across for any game.
But trying to get these trophies, like I said before are alot of trial and error, but I don't find that it becomes tedious. The amount of damage you can cause by launching your character into a brick wall, with a gratifying SMACK, does entertain very well. I think its a little sadistic, but funny. I enjoy it anyway.
One thing I don't like about this game are the characters. There aren't many of them. I started out with 1 guy, 2 more that you have to unlock and the rest you have to buy for .99 cents. There are 10 in total that you can buy from the store along with a new level to shoot people around in. I did buy 5 characters. Mainly the girls with big boobs. Something funny about seeing a big titted girl getting whacked in the head by a giant foot that does not get old. Sadly there isn't a achievement or trophy for"whack a girl in the head 50 times".
This game is pretty fun and entertaining and I really like the title song and its not for younger kids. There are alot of sexual content in this game and vulgarity. Its entertaining in the way that the game with the polar bear and the penguins, where you have to whack the penguin with the bat to see how far you can make him fly. I'd recommend this game to anyone with a PS3. You don't have to download all the extras to get your fill of this game. But it does help
